Chapter 5 - Elements and Compounds

Pg. 48

1. Sulphur
  • Dull appearance
  • Brittle, not malleable or ductile
  • Relatively low melting and boiling points
  • Poor conductor of heat and electricity
  • Relatively low density

Zinc

  • Shiny appearance
  • Malleable and ductile
  • High melting and boiling points
  • Good conductor of heat and electricity
  • High density

2(a) The properties of the elements change gradually from metallic to non-metallic properties.

(b) Sodium, Magnesium, Aluminium

(c) Chlorine and argon. They are in the last 2 groups of the periodic table and the last 2 groups usually consist of non-metallic elements with low melting and boiling points.

Pg. 49

1.

Electrical wire - Metal : Good conductor of electricity

Frying pan - Metal : Good conductor of heat

Airship - Non-metal : Non-metals have low densities

Oven interior - Metal : High melting points

2a) Sodium is a reactive metal which reacts vigourously with water but aluminium does not.

b) Mercury has a low melting point and is a liquid at room temperature. Silver has a high melting point and is a solid at room temperature.
